Crate Training

Fact:  Dogs like crates since they replicate the close quarters of a den.

The crate is used when you are home, as a "safe zone" or for "time outs" and when you leave the house.  If you use the crate properly your puppy becomes comfortable and will not worry that you will not return or that you are leaving them alone.  This helps to prevent separation anxiety.

Housebreaking Tips

Repetition is essential!  Your puppy may not understand or know what is expected unless you repeatedly show them.  The keys to success are timing and your crate.

  • 15 minutes after your puppy eats or plays vigorously, he will need to eliminate.
  • Take your puppy outside immediately after napping.
  • At night, set your alarm for approximately every 3 hours for the first week and then gradually increase the time.
  • If the crate is too large, your puppy can eaisly soil on one side and sleep on the other.  Prevent this by adding a divider so there is only room for the puppy to stand, turn around and lie down comfortable.

Socialize Your Puppy

From 7 weeks to 4 months of age, your puppy is in the "socialization period".  In this important stage calmly introduce your puppy to a wide variety of other dogs, people, places and situations.
