Weimaraner Breed Standard

General Appearance: A medium-sized gray dog, with fine aristocratic features. He should present a picture of grace, speed, stamina, alertness and balance. Above all, the dog's conformation must indicate the ability to work with great speed and endurance in the field.

Height: Height at the shoulder:  sire's 25 to 27 inches; dam's, 23 to 25 inches.

Coat and Color: Short, smooth and sleek, solid color, in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, usually blending to lighter shades on the head and ears. A small white marking on the chest is permitted.

Temperament: The temperament should be friendly, fearless, alert and obedient.

Reason for being: Used for hunting pheasant, quail, and other upland birds and waterfowl. They are bred for intelligence, stamina, and to be able to work all day in the field. These dogs love to work and play and have seemingly boundless energy. Weims are versatile dogs with the brains and energy to do almost anything, from obedience, to tracking, to loving companion. WHEN NOT WORKING, THEY EXPECT TO BE A PART OF YOUR FAMILY AND TO BE INCLUDED IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Their skills are also useful inside the house. You may find yourself in the company of a Weim that you thought you had securely placed behind a gate, or shut into another room. Some Weims are also good at letting themselves into or out of the house. To a Weim a fence is an obstacle to jump, climb, break through, or dig under. Gates are for opening and Weims learn quickly how to work many kinds of latches.

Personality: Intelligent, fun-loving, demanding, strong-willed, devoted to its family, spiteful, loving, bossy, mischievous, responsive, stubborn, willing to take charge if no one else does, and a good friend. Weims are complex and demanding dogs, best for experienced dog owners.

Training: Weims CAN learn to do many things. There are stories of dogs that can turn on a faucet to get a drink, open doors, open the refrigerator, and even one who figured out how to turn on a microwave. They can open the typical fence gate latch in a flash. They can learn as many tricks as you or they think of. Training them to do what YOU want them to do can be a challenge.
